The year is 535 AD. The Vandals in North Africa have been conquered. The Sassanid Persians are supposedly holding to the agreed 'Eternal Peace' and so Emperor of the Eastern Romans, Justinian I, turns his attention west, with the aim of reclaiming Italy and restoring the glory of the Empire. At the Gothic capital, Ravenna, word comes that the famed general Belisarius approaches...
At one point a number of generals were sent to occupy Italy, but due to Justinian's distrust, none were put in overall charge. At the same time intrigue, corruption and scandal abound in Constantinople, with the former dancing girl, Empress Theodora, at the heart of it.
Meanwhile, the Hippodrome serves as a focal point for the rivalry between the Blue and Green factions. Throughout the era, Belisarius fights on, but always under-resourced for fear of a coup. How would you fare in a game featuring a cast of thousands, barbarians behind the gates, chariot-racing and a world gone mad?
